Depression: first-line is not a prescription pad
An estimated 5.2% of adults have depression, about 322 million people, and it is roughly 1.5 times more common in women. Over 10% of pregnant and postnatal women are affected. WHO lists psychological treatment (behavioural activation, CBT, interpersonal therapy, problem-solving) as first line. Antidepressants are not needed for mild depression and should not be used in children. In high-income countries only about one third of affected people receive treatment.
