Clinical Update: WHO's Decade of Healthy Ageing
The world's population aged 60+ is projected to double by 2050. WHO's Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030) highlights a shift in focus clinicians will increasingly need to apply: optimising functional ability, not just managing disease in isolation.
For HCPs seeing older adults, a few practical takeaways:
Screen for functional decline (mobility, cognition, hearing, vision) at routine visits, not only when a patient reports a problem.
Review medication lists regularly. Polypharmacy risk rises sharply after age 65.
Ask about falls in the past year. A single fall is a strong predictor of future falls and warrants assessment.
Don't attribute new symptoms to age alone. Fatigue, confusion or reduced appetite can signal a treatable underlying condition.
Healthy ageing is best supported by integrated, proactive primary care rather than episodic treatment of individual conditions.

WHO's work on the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030)
The UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030) is an opportunity to bring together governments, civil society, international agencies, professionals, academia, the media, and the private sector for ten years of concerted, catalytic and collaborative action to improve the lives of older people, their families, and the communities in which they live.
