Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women, with around 660,000 new cases and 350,000 deaths in 2022. About 94% of those deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. It is caused by persistent HPV infection, and women living with HIV are 6 times more likely to develop it. HPV vaccination and screening with treatment of pre-cancer are effective and very cost-effective. Treating precancer is a simple procedure that prevents cancer.
