WHO Mpox Update: Where the Outbreak Stands
WHO's latest external situation report (No. 69) shows the multi-country mpox outbreak is still active, though patterns are shifting:
32 countries across four WHO regions reported confirmed cases in the most recent reporting period, with about three-quarters of cases concentrated in the African Region.
Clade Ib transmission has now been reported for the first time in Chile and Hungary, alongside ongoing local transmission in parts of Europe and Thailand.
A global multi-partner initiative to improve vaccine access launched in August 2026 in Addis Ababa, and the standing IHR recommendations have been extended to August 2027.
Clinical relevance: mpox should stay on the differential for patients presenting with a vesiculopustular rash, especially with relevant travel or exposure history, even outside regions classically associated with the outbreak. Isolation precautions and reporting pathways are worth revisiting locally given the extended international response.
