Hepatology: hepatitis B, the undiagnosed majority
WHO estimates 240 million people were living with chronic hepatitis B in 2024, and the infection caused 1.1 million deaths, mostly from cirrhosis and liver cancer. Only 27% of those infected knew their status, and only 10 million (4.3%) were on antiviral treatment. The vaccine gives nearly 100% protection, with the first dose within 24 hours of birth. Screen at-risk adults, and treat eligible patients.
