WHO Adopts New Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (2026-2036)
At the 79th World Health Assembly in May 2026, member states endorsed an updated Global Action Plan on AMR, setting the agenda for the next decade.
Context: WHO's most recent surveillance report found that roughly 1 in 6 laboratory-confirmed bacterial infections worldwide were resistant to antibiotic treatment, with resistance rising in over 40% of monitored pathogen-antibiotic combinations between 2018 and 2023. The African and South-East Asian regions carry a disproportionate share of this burden.
What the new plan prioritises: stronger surveillance and laboratory capacity, infection prevention and sanitation, more equitable access to effective antimicrobials, and sustained financing, recognising that AMR is both a clinical and a health-systems problem.
For day-to-day practice, the fundamentals haven't changed: prescribe antimicrobials only when indicated, review empirical therapy against culture results, and avoid treating colonisation as infection. Individual stewardship decisions are what the global numbers are ultimately built from.
