MYTH: All patients taking GLP-1 receptor agonists must stop treatment before surgery.
FACT: Perioperative management should be individualised. Gastrointestinal symptoms, dose escalation, aspiration risk, the procedure and anaesthetic plan all influence decision-making. Some patients may continue treatment, while others may require additional precautions or a change in therapy.
Clinical pearl: Coordinate decisions between the prescribing clinician, procedural team and anaesthesia team; avoid blanket medication instructions.
