Ophthalmology: 1 billion cases that could have been prevented
At least 2.2 billion people have a vision impairment, and for at least 1 billion of them it could have been prevented or hasn’t been addressed. That includes 94 million with cataract, 88.4 million with uncorrected refractive error and 826 million with presbyopia. One in 2 people who need cataract surgery can’t access it, and about 2 in 3 people in low-income countries who need glasses lack them. Simple refraction and referral can restore function.
