Symptom improvement always means inflammation is under control.
MYTH: If a patient with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis feels better, further assessment of disease activity is unnecessary.
FACT: Clinical symptoms and objective inflammatory activity do not always align. Biomarkers such as faecal calprotectin and C-reactive protein can support monitoring, alongside endoscopic assessment when indicated.
Clinical takeaway: Symptom control is important, but treatment targets may also require objective evidence of disease control.
