Gynae-oncology: cervical cancer is preventable
In 2024 there were around 604,000 new cervical cancer cases and 280,000 deaths. HPV types 16 and 18 cause about 76% of cases, and women living with HIV are six times more likely to develop it. WHO recommends HPV vaccination for girls aged 9-14. For screening, it advises a high-performance HPV test every 5-10 years from age 30, or every 3-5 years from age 25 for women with HIV. Self-collected samples are as reliable as clinician-collected ones, which can widen access.
