Climate Change May Be Fueling Antibiotic Resistance in Salmonella

A new global study suggests that climate change could be accelerating the rise of antibiotic resistance in Salmonella.

Researchers analyzed more than 480,000 Salmonella genomes from 139 countries, between 1940–2023 and found a 10% global increase in antibiotic-resistance genes associated with climate change.

Rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns may influence bacterial survival, adaptation and the spread of resistance genes. While the findings reveal a strong association, they do not prove that climate change directly causes antibiotic resistance.
